Islamorada has a new place to enjoy coffee, frozen drinks, ice cream and other “comfort food” that won’t hurt their wallets.
Desiray Pruett has opened On the Bricks Café in the Caribbean Village courtyard shopping center at mile marker 81.9, oceanside. She opened her doors to customers on Aug. 1.
“I want to cater to the local crowd who want to eat in a nice environment and have a good meal for under $10,” Pruett said.
The menu includes sandwiches, wraps and her most popular item, pulled pork.
“I sell out of that everyday,” Pruett said.
There are also daily specials. Everything is made fresh on site. She also makes her own ice cream, and nothing on Pruett’s menu is over $7.
She also said she will make items not on the menu, if requested by customers.
“If I have the ingredients, I’ll gladly do it,” she said.
Customers can eat their food or enjoy their drinks in the bricked courtyard under the shade of ficus trees. There will also be live music by local musicians, including Pruett.
Pruett said she also hopes to do delivery once the business gets going enough for her to hire staff.
For now, On the Bricks is open Monday through Saturdays, 10 a.m. through 4 p.m., but Pruett is hoping to extend her hours so she can hold open-mic nights and dart tournaments.
Pruett, 32, has lived in the Keys for four year, but said she has been coming here to visit family since she was a little girl. She had worked at area restaurants before opening On the Bricks. She said when she told her friends she was opening the café, they told her she was crazy to start a business in these tough economic times.
“If the food is good, I think you can make it through the tough times,” Pruett said.
